Six for Saturday and Sunday

Lots of action in the NFL and NCAA football and basketball. And we've learned that where there is action, controversy can't be that far behind.

College Football
1. Florida's (12-1) win in the SEC Championship game was enough in the eyes of the BCS gods to overtake Michigan (11-1). According to the tale of the tape (i.e. actually watching the teams play and not just box scores and game reports), Michigan is the better team, but Florida has the better resume due to the overall strength of the SEC. Truth be told, the Big Ten was top-heavy this season while the SEC had no clear-cut great team. In sum, the human element (Harris & Coaches polls) played a large role in granting the Gators an opportunity at the national title.

2. Kudos to UCLA for ending the "but they lost to Oregon State" argument against USC receiving the #2 ranking in the BCS. As it stands, Oregon State is 9-4 and ranked 22nd in the BCS. They're not that bad and have won seven of eight. On the UCLA side of things, Karl Dorrell has even more job security, as his team won for the first time against SC since the Deshaun Foster era.

NFL
3. How 'bout them Titans (5-7)?! This team has taken on its coach's personality and this makes them very dangerous, as Jeff Fisher is one of the best coaches in the league. Vince Young has found a comfort zone within this offense and the defensive unit has improved immensely since the beginning of the season.

4. The Cowboys have passed another test under Tony Romo: win the game in spite of mistakes by the quarterback. Whenever the Cowboys needed a play, someone stepped up. Needless to say, the Giants helped out, be it a fumble after an interception, or no less than two bonehead personal foul penalties that were away from the ball.

College Basketball
5. After its 64-61 win over Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Saturday night, Wichita State found itself ranked third in Sunday's edition of the RPI. It's early for Mark Turgeon's club, but road wins over LSU and Syracuse bode well for a good seeding come tourney time.

6. In a previous post, I had mentioned that Florida Head Coach Billy Donovan had to give playing time to some of his youngsters in order to gain more depth. Well, what I didn't know about when I posted that was the string of illnesses strickening Gator nation. Corey Brewer did not play in tonight's loss at Florida State and Joakim Noah was coughing uncontrollably during dead ball situations. For Florida's sake, I hope that the squad can overcome these illnesses in order to determine if a full-strength team can repeat.
